School of the Sailor

May 18 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm

At School of the Sailor, led by Ship’s Company, visitors at Todd’s will be able to participate with our sailors at several learning stations covering introductory knowledge based on early 19th-century skills of sailing ships: terminology of sailing ships and some rudimentary navigation protocols.  Ship’s Company will discuss local history and demonstrate skills, such as coiling rope, mock cannon drill, and cutlass drill using single sticks (wooden cutlasses).  Examples of Foodways, uniforms and sailmaking will be set up as displays as well.

Ship’s Company is a living history organization dedicated to interpreting the history of the U.S. Navy and the communities that sustained it. Our core areas of focus include sailors, marines, and maritime-adjacent civilians of the following periods:

American Revolution — 1772-1783
War of 1812 — 1812-1815
American Civil War — 1861-65
